I Built HiEnglishQuiz.com

Recently, I started building HiEnglishQuiz.com, an English-learning website developed as a collaboration between tungnguyen.work and hightech-st.com.

The idea actually started with TikTok.

Earlier, we created English-learning content on TikTok with a simple goal: build an audience, experiment with different types of educational content, and hopefully generate some revenue from it.

While experimenting, we noticed something interesting.

Some of the simplest videos performed the best.

In particular, people seemed to enjoy two formats:

• Grammar questions
• Visual vocabulary questions such as “What is it called?”

The second format is basically a modern version of a flashcard.

You see an image, try to remember the English word, and then reveal the answer.

That made us think:

What if we turned this simple TikTok interaction into a proper learning experience?

And that became HiEnglishQuiz.com.

Learning English Through Quizzes

The main idea behind Hi English Quiz is simple:

Everything should feel like a quiz.

Instead of asking learners to read long lessons before they can practise, we want people to be able to open the website and start answering questions immediately.

Currently, the main focus is on:

• Grammar
• Vocabulary

For vocabulary in particular, we use images whenever they help learners understand and remember a word.

I personally think visual flashcards are one of the most effective ways to learn new vocabulary.

Instead of only seeing:

Apple = a round fruit

you see the actual object, connect the image with the word apple, and build a stronger association in your memory.

That is exactly the experience we want to bring from our TikTok content into the website.

The Heart System

We also wanted to make practising feel a little bit like playing a game.

Every learner has Hearts.

For a logged-in user:

• You start with 10 Hearts
• Hearts regenerate at 2 Hearts per hour

For an anonymous user:

• You also start with 10 Hearts
• Hearts regenerate at 1 Heart per hour

If you answer a question incorrectly, you lose 1 Heart.

We also have a daily streak system.

If you keep practising every day, you can earn additional Hearts from your streak:

• +1 Heart for each streak milestone
• Up to 10 additional Hearts

This means a normal active user can effectively have around 20 Hearts available.

The idea is not to stop people from learning. Instead, the Heart system gives each question a little more meaning and encourages learners to come back regularly.

Premium Is Coming Later

We are also planning a Premium option in the future.

Premium users are planned to receive:

• Up to 100 Hearts
• Regeneration of 100 Hearts per hour

In practice, that means Premium users will be able to practise almost without interruption.

But Premium is something for later.

For now, the priority is much simpler:

Make the quizzes good enough that people actually enjoy answering them.

Where We Want to Go

Hi English Quiz is still evolving.

The long-term goal is to make the experience increasingly personalised.

Questions are mapped to CEFR levels from A1 to C2, and as learners answer more questions, the system can gradually understand their ability and serve questions that better match their current level.

Rather than simply telling someone:

“You are B1.”

we eventually want the system to understand something more detailed, such as:

Your vocabulary is around B2, but your grammar with prepositions is closer to A2.

There is still a lot to build before we get there.

But the foundation is intentionally simple:

See a question. Think about the answer. Answer it. Learn something. Repeat.

That is how the project started on TikTok, and it is still the core idea behind the website today.
